Tickets on sale for World’s Biggest Liar contest

Fibbers from across the globe will be battling it out to be named the best liar next month.

Tickets went on sale this week for the popular World’s Biggest Liar competition which takes place at Santon Bridge, Wasdale, on November 15.

The competition sees story tellers go head-to-head while entertaining the audience at the Bridge Inn with their over-the-top stories.

Maryport’s Glen Boylan holds the title for telling the best fib. It was third time lucky for the Sellafield worker

Last year’s event saw 11 contestants, with Wasdale resident Michael Naylor, known by the stage name Monkey Liar, second and third place going to Roger Rivers, from Maryport.

Competitors had travelled from as far afield as Aberdeen, Manchester and Northampton to take part. There was also one woman, Rebecca Purves, who came from Chippenham.

The world’s media descended on the small pub, including a reporter from the Wall St Journal, BBC’s Countryfile and Radio Cumbria.

The competition sees old rivals and new competitors take to the stage for five-minutes to capture the audience with their white lies.

The event, which is sponsored by Cockermouth’s Jennings Brewery, is becoming more successful each year.

It dates back to the 19th century when Wasdale landlord Will Ritson became well known for his tall tales.

This year will see different landlords at the countryside pub after husband and wife team Lesley Rhodes and John Morrow said their goodbyes to the Bridge Inn in August.

Manchester couple Len and Veronica Bromby have taken over.
