Three vehicle crash closes main road in north Cumbria

A crash involving a bus carrying school children and two vans shut one of Cumbria’s busiest roads.

Pupils from Yewdale School in Carlisle were on the bus when it was involved in the collision on the A595 at Mealsgate, near Wigton, at 10am today.

Police said a small number of children received minor facial injuries but no-one was seriously hurt. Staff from the school were called to help with the children.

The bus was being driven by a 71-year-old man from Seaton. The driver of one of the vans was a 36-year-old woman from Wigton and the driver of the other, a man from the north east.

The A595, between Mealsgate and Blennerhasset, reopened before 1pm.

Emergency services dealing with this crash were diverted to another incident nearby, involving a cyclist trapped under a car.

The rider was trapped for more than an hour after the collision near Mealsgate.

A section of the B5299 road near Boltongate was closed following this crash, which happened at 11.15am.

The woman, aged 42, was freed shortly after 12.15pm by a team of firefighters, who used blocks to lift the car, a Ford Fiesta.

She was airlifted to hospital by the Pride of Cumbria air ambulance, with what were said to be serious multiple injuries.

The driver of the car, a man, was taken away by ambulance but is not thought to have been seriously hurt.
