Three-quarters of Cumbrians on sick judged fit to work

Nearly three quarters of north and west Cumbria’s sickness benefit claimants are being judged capable of work, it has been revealed.

Have your say

Yes Degsy but they are my pennies!

Let us consider the man - Cameron. Himself the parent of a disabled child - albeit largely cared for by a nanny. Having achieved office you might have imagined his personal insights may have influenced his policies toward the disabled and carers. Not a bit of it. Now there's the measure of him as a human being - and he doesn't even have the excuse of ignorance. Those of us who are actually acquainted with the world of caring can tell you how he is piecemeal dismantling the whole structure, causing real unhappiness and turning the nation into a morally bankrupt banana republic - though clearly without the bananas. Perhaps turnips.

Sorry Evil Mcbad, you have been caught out in another porkie.
These tests were brought in under the last government and piloted in many areas. The current government did not draft the new rules or change them in anyway, they only implemented the pre existing plans of the last government.

What does that say about 'divide and rule' tactic of a Labour Government?

To suggest that nearly 75% of north & west Cumbrian Incapacity Benefit claimants are judged fit for work is nothing other than a Consevative/Lib dem sponsored pernicious attack upon working class people & their families because that is exactly what it is-a class issue!
The Conservative/Lib dem coalition have brought in the assessment company Atos to carry out its' dirty work which includes a degrading & humiliating means tests upon vulnerable people & here is one example how.....
And I am not making this up........
In 2007 a police officer accidently shot a man in the stomach & he was in a coma for 13 days & he was lucky to suvive but he now has kidney, liver & bowel problems & the assessment company Atos declared him fit for work!
How can anyone work with problems of that nature?
Yes, people may be languishing on benefits but through no fault of their own which is one of many reasons why Atos should be shut down and all benefit claimants should be paid what they are entitled to, in fact they should be increased, I don't have a problem with it.
And I don't have a problem if they have a car due to the lack of public transport!
A policy of this type is the ruling class(the government, bosses, bankers & financers) attacking the working class people on benefits.(that's the class issue I meant)
Oh! On the subject of scroungers that is often perpetuated, the biggest scroungers in the UK are the royal family-who have never done a days work yet!
Followed by the bosses of the privatised industries who are on six figure salaries each year!
Then there are the media barons.
The list goes on......
They are trying to make working class people pay for the financial crisis that they created.
We workers will not pay for this crisis!!!

I suffered a stroke over two years ago which robbed me of my eyesight and am now partially sighted in a way that would distress many people if they had this condition. My driving licence was revoked by the DVLA after being able to drive for nearly 30 years, taking away my independence and freedom but not once have I claimed any benefits. I work fulltime and have had the full backing of my employers to be able to stay in work. Am I lucky? You bet. I could have been dead. So I agree with Employed Disabled - stop whinging and get a job. Benefits are for those who genuinely are unable to work.

I work, pay tax etc and dont stress about this, seriously, calm down and dont worry about it! Does the fact someone is maybe illegally claiming benefit really effect your life? I couldn't care less, and before you start with the ' its my tax paying for it' rubbish, you are talking pennies. Worry about things you can alter and change, not this.

i agree that those who are milking the IB and DLA should be put back on to JSA and have to find a job, but to be honest does this really solve any problems?
As of Feb 2012 the UK currently has 2.65million people claiming benefits, fair enough a large percentages of that 2.65m could be claimants who have no intention of finding work but i still find it hard to believe that there is 2.65m jobs available in the UK when most companies/businesses are having to retire/payoff staff or even closedown due to the current economy.

Even if a company does take on new staff, most of the time they hire someone who already has qualifications for that area of work so what happens to the rest of the applicants of that job.

We need a non-government agency, like bounty hunters to catch the cheats out. The best places to look are pubs, cafes, travel agents. Half the people I see being a shopkeeper have walking aids through the week. But not at weekends.

Amazing - the government could apparently save a lot of money by not hiring so many statisticians and data analysts. We don't need them. A lot of guys here have all the figures at their finger tips. They seem to know just how many people are really ill and how many are faking it. You really should collate this data send it in to the DWP. Wake up - this anecdotal garbage you are spouting is just a reflection of the contents of your own rather unpleasant minds. I work for a living and pay my taxes ... and don't spend a second worrying that someone else is getting a free ride. I would still rather have a job and aspirations. Perhaps it just better to have a glass half-full outlook. I choose not to indulge in these vicious and degrading fantasies - I simply don't want to lower the tone of my existence. Yeah .. I could never ever buy into that Tory propaganda. Not least because it doesn't even make sense. Why would I care if some get a free crutch and a few pints when I have Fred Goodwin creaming off millions, or a consultant physician retiring with a 65K pension? This is just smoke and mirrors folks.. the big distraction while they pick your pockets while you are busy snarling at people with less than you have. Sigh.

What do you think of rail services in Cumbria?

Good. But there is always room for improvement

Not good: There needs to be much more investment

I rarely travel by rail
