Thieves stole nearly £40,000-worth of goods during a crime spree in two towns, police have said.

Cockermouth and Keswick are being targeted by criminals who have swiped items including jewellery, clothes and an iPhone from shops and businesses.

Police have stepped up patrols in the towns and have warned businesses to be vigilant.

In one incident on Tuesday at about 4.20pm, a diamond solitaire ring worth £28,000 was taken from a shop in Pack Horse Court, Keswick.

In another incident, at about 9pm on Wednesday, thieves took a trailer and 14 mountain bikes worth £9,900 from a business at Whinlatter.

On Wednesday, an iPhone 4 worth £400 was stolen from a business in St John’s Street, Keswick.

Officers says crime rates often increase in Cumbrian towns during the busy holiday period.

Inspector Dennis Kelly, of Cumbria Police, said: “We will work hard to prevent offences being committed and increasing the patrols in the areas will hopefully deter criminals and prevent anyone else becoming a victim of theft.

“We ask members of the public to report any suspicious activity to us, but also for staff working in local businesses to be vigilant.

“Do not leave personal possession on display and make sure private staff areas are not accessible by members of the public.

Other items stolen have included: three polo shirts worth £90 from a shop in Main Street, Keswick between April and April 25; alcohol worth £10 from Shorley Lane, Keswick, on April 26; six T-shirts from Main Street, Keswick, worth £180 on Sunday; and a brown leather wallet worth £25 also from Main Street on Monday.

Anyone with information about any of the crimes should call police on 101.
