The American sandwich franchise Subway will open a 64-seater restaurant opposite the Topshop store.

Work began on the restaurant on Monday and the area has been split into two enclosed units. Dunmail Park hopes to fill the other unit with another retailer.

Gordon Osbaldestin, centre surveyor, said: “We hope Subway will push up numbers and get people to stay here longer.

“Years ago people went on coach trips to Dunmail Park and spent the day here and that is what we want to see again.”

He said it would be one of the larger Subway branches, selling sandwiches and salads, drinks and pastries.

Mr Osbaldestin said that since Asda opened in the retail park in 2010 footfall had quadrupled with between 40,000 and 45,000 people a week visiting.

The new restaurant is due to open on November 15.
