Stanwix wins city’s first ‘urban trophy’

STANWIX has blossomed into a united community and won a coveted trophy for looking so good.
The Cumbria in Bloom Award winners were announced this week – and Stanwix became the first Carlisle community to lift the best urban community trophy.
It comes after a year of hard work by local residents, school children and people at Barn Close care home.
County councillor Elizabeth Mallinson said: “It’s the first time the cup’s been won in the Carlisle area.
“We made a decision to go for an award and we had 35 volunteers from the community who went litter-picking.
“We got sponsorship from the city and county councils for planters and hanging baskets. The school has a dedicated teacher teaching gardening and wildlife.
“This big effort has gelled the community together.”
School children have tended a wild area in the churchyard of St Michael’s and the front of the community centre has been transformed from litter strewn to blooming. Mrs Mallinson added: “The community centre used to have lots of litter around it and stark concrete steps.
“The litter is gone and the steps have been painted. Planters have been filled and it looks beautiful.”
City councillors Jacquelyne Geddes and Paul Nedved helped, along with scouts and cubs.
And the good work is continuing long after the Cumbria in Bloom judges have left with a bulb-planting session at Stanwix School on September 17.
Friends of Rickerby Park and Stanwix Community Association also got involved with efforts to smarten the area up.
“People like to feel they are doing something for their community,” added Mrs Mallinson.
“We have a very enthusiastic group of school children and teachers who want to improve the community they live in.”
Barn Close Residential Home was awarded an individual trophy for coming top in the residential homes category.
