Skate park in memory of Cumbrian bus crash teenager moves forward

Plans for a skate park in memory of a teenager who died in a tragic bus crash have taken a major step forward.
A group, headed by Kieran Goulding’s mum, are planning a skateboard, scooter and BMX park for a site at Hensingham, near Whitehaven.
And the group has just been awarded with a charity number, meaning that funding for the project – called Kie Park – can now be applied for.
Kieran’s mum, Tracey Nicholson, of Ruskin Drive, Whitehaven, said that she was relived that the charity number had finally been received, as it was holding up applying for funding.
“I’m relieved we have it now as we can move to funders and can put out collection boxes,” she said.
And plans for extra cash for the park are pressing ahead.
Tracey has signed up for her latest fundraising challenge to bring in cash for the project. She will take part in the Great North Run at Newcastle, in September, alongside her other son, Adam.
And she is in the process of planning a prize draw which has prizes including a BMX bike and a tour of Dovenby-based M Sports.
More than £4,000 has already been raised for the park, which, it is hoped, will open in two years.
Last year Tracey cycled 900 miles, the equivalent of Land’s End to John O’Groats, to bring in £2,613. And friends of Kieran, who was just 15 years old when he died alongside Chloe Walker in the horrific Keswick coach crash in 2010, have also completed fundraising challenges.
Anybody willing to have a collection box to raise funds, or who wants to donate an item to the prize draw should contact Tracey on tracey.nicholson23@gmail.com or visit www.facebook.com/whitehavenbmxtrack.
