Singing group for Cumbrian Alzheimer's sufferers

A singing group which aims to reduce social isolation and depression among people with Alzheimer’s disease is set to get off the ground.

The Alzheimer’s Society is starting the group and is looking for people with a background in music to volunteer to lead the singing or help the group in other ways.

Latest figures show that there are 7,283 people diagnosed with dementia in Cumbria, and that this is expected to rise to 10,040 by 2021.

Volunteers are also wanted to welcome participants into the group.

The group was first started in Kendal, before further groups were established om Penrith, Allerdale and Barrow.

The Singing for the Brain group will meet weekly in the Archive Centre at Petteril Bank Road.

Andy Hopkins, support services manager for the area, said: “Singing for the Brain has many health benefits woven in the fun of singing.

“It is an activity which can bring people closer together as it emphasises what the person with dementia can still do, rather than what they can’t.

“It is enjoyable, friendly and uplifting.”

It is estimated that the number of people in the UK who live with dementia will increase from 800,000 to more than a million by 2021.

Organisers say the singing group will help to provide a service for people with dementia and their carers.

Anyone interested in helping can contact Andy Hopkins or Louise Wisdom on 01228 819299.
