Seventh arrest in Carlisle murder probe

A seventh suspect has been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of a man in Carlisle.

The 18-year-old man was today being held in custody along with six other people arrested earlier over the death of Polish factory worker Piotr Kulinski in Harraby.

All of those arrested are said to be of Polish nationality.

Five men are being held on suspicion of murder, while a woman and the latest man arrested are being held on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.

Police and ambulances were called just after 6am on Sunday to a cul-de-sac off Arnside Road following reports that a man had been stabbed.

Paramedics were unable to save Mr Kulinski, who worked at the city’s Cavaghan & Gray factory, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The arrests followed and warrants to keep the earlier suspects in continued detention were granted by a court last night so police have more time to question them today.

Detectives are checking CCTV footage and have been speaking to residents, businesses and witnesses in the city to establish what happened on Sunday morning.

Detective Chief Inspector Paul Duhig said: “We are absolutely dedicated to uncovering the evidence we need to give Mr Kulinski’s family the answers they deserve.

“We have been speaking to witnesses but are convinced there are more people out there who can help us.

“Please, if you were in the area at the time, or have any information that can help us piece together exactly what happened that morning or in the lead up to this tragedy, get in touch.

“We will do what we can to support you and you may have the piece of information that is vital to our inquiry.”

Officers yesterday said they believed some members of the Polish community “were aware of what happened to escalate a situation which ended in tragic circumstances”.

Neighbours said that Mr Kulinski had not lived in Harraby for long. It is understood he had been in Carlisle at least since 2008 and was previously in Furze Street, off Greystone Road.

Residents there were left shaken by the news.

Ian Harper, of Furze Street, told the News & Star: “I saw it on the news but I didn’t think it was him. I knew him to say hello, to say morning when I saw him. He was alright.”

One Polish woman working in the city said how she had regularly seen the people involved around in Carlisle.

“It’s terrible,” she said. “It is a big shock.”
