Second Keswick Midsummer Festival a huge success

A week-long festival ended on a high after days of exceptionally good weather.

More than 1,000 people crowded around the music stage for the last day of Keswick Midsummer Festival, watching a variety of home-grown acts from Keswick and the North Lakes.

Performances included a Black Sabbath tribute band and the Keswick-based choir, Committed to Rock.

Chairman Paul Titley said the “phenomenal weather” made their first week-long festival a success.

“The thing we always pray for is good weather,” he admitted. “The whole place was chilled all afternoon.”

The festival ran from Sunday June 22, kicking off with Scruffs debut dog show – a credit to Keswick being named the friendliest dog town in the UK for the second year – and finishing with the music stage on Sunday.

Mr Titley continued: “We wanted to start with a bang and finish with a bang. Scruffs exceeded all our expectations. It was more like a boom.

“The only comments we’ve had is why couldn’t it have gone on longer. The fact that it went so smoothly is testament to the effort the team puts in.”

The festival is now in its second year and has grown quickly. In 2013 it was just a one-day event, but this year organisers upped it to an impressive eight-day programme.

Throughout the week events were held by the photographic society, the athletic club and the Scouts, among others.

There was something for everyone including farm animals and entertainment for children and a Where’s Wally search around the town organised by the bookshop.

Mr Titley said his team are already looking ahead to next year’s festival and what they can do to top it.
