Royal visitor presents prizes at Cumbria School Games in Carlisle

A sporting event for pupils from across Cumbria made sure that children “know what it takes to win,” according to a PE teacher.
Around 900 young people from primary, secondary and special school competed at the Cumbria School Games which were held at the Sheepmount in Carlisle yesterday.
As if that weren’t enough, His Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucester was on hand to present prizes and trophies to victorious and excited schoolchildren.
In keeping with the Olympic theme, a dance troupe from Richard Rose Central Academy performed for delighted onlookers while decked out in Union Jack uniforms and red, blue and white pom poms.
Ben Hutchinson, teacher at Kirkby Stephen Primary, believes that the event will be a valuable one for pupils.
The school came first in their quick stick cricket and second in golf.
Mr Hutchinson said: “It’s been a brilliant event and the kids did fantastically.
“The way they represented themselves has been brilliant. A lot of them took up sports they haven’t played before. They know what it takes to win now, which is not easy.”
The closing ceremony included young ambassadors, drumming and music.
Fay Badder, whose daughter Zoe, 16, was attending the event as a young reporter, said she greatly enjoyed the event.
“It’s been absolutely wonderful,” she said. “The children have had a fantastic time.
“My favourite part was watching Zoe and her friends doing their reporting.”
As well as the young people competing, there were 150 young leaders officiating, umpiring and helping out, as well as photographers.
Liz Staley, who was attending the event with her nine-year-old son Luke, said she was proud of his achievements.
She explained: “I’m pleased at how well he did – the kids all did so well. I enjoyed cheering them along – it was absolutely fantastic.”
Richard Johnston, partnership manager for Active Cumbria, said: “Sport gives young people a real focus and there’s been lots of work done on sports across Cumbria.
“I’d like to express my thanks to all the young people involved in this event.”
