Following the accident a man and a woman have been arrested and bailed on suspicion of a number of charges, and police are keen to speak to people who were in the area.

The incident happened at 1.10pm on Tuesday on Marchon Road, Whitehaven.

Members of the public told police that a black Peugeot 206 was seen driving dangerously at high speed. The male driver and a passenger were then seen fleeing across fields towards the Woodhouse estate.

A 24-year-old man has since been arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving, failing to stop after a road traffic collision, and driving without insurance.

A large quantity of drugs were then found at the man’s house. Following this discovery both he and an 18-year-old woman have been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class B drug. Both have been bailed.

Police would like to speak to a man who was seen jogging in the area, as well as a woman walking a dog and a man in a red vehicle who stopped at the scene of the crash.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Cumbria police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
