A major search operation had been underway after the 53-year-old, of Selby, failed to return home.

Wasdale Mountain Rescue Team with the assistance of six other Lake District mountain rescue teams, search dogs from SARDA and a Sea King helicopter from RAF Valley in North Wales searched throughout Tuesday night and yesterday.

Mr Lonsdale was last seen at about 6.30am on Tuesday at his home, when he left to go walking on Scafell Pike. His vehicle was found at Wasdale Head.

Cumbria police said yesterday the body of a man had been discovered in a waterfall pool, south west of the Great Gable summit.

Police are not treating his death as suspicious and are continuing enquiries on behalf of the coroner.

Officers are supporting Mr Lonsdale's family.
