A man who suffered serious injuries in a head-on crash outside Carlisle was said to be improving this afternoon.
The 20-year-old, from Cumbria, was initially said to be critical but stable with head injuries following a two-car smash on the Kingmoor to Rockcliffe road yesterday.
But police confirmed that medics said he was now in a stable condition in a Newcastle hospital after improving during the morning.
Three other people were hurt in the accident which happened close to an old railway bridge.
The badly injured man, who was transferred to the north east from the Cumberland Infirmary in Carlisle, was a passenger in a Vauxhall Astra.
This was in collision with a Renault Clio just after 3pm.
The driver of the Astra, which was heading away from Carlisle, and two women in the Clio, suffered minor injuries. The Clio caught fire briefly but was dealt with by firefighters.
Police, who carried out investigations at the scene of the crash, are appealing for witnesses to get in touch on 0845 3300247.
