Report backs proposal for gym at Carlisle community centre

Controversial plans to add a gym to a Carlisle community centre should get the go-ahead, say planners.

An application for the proposed extension has been submitted by Botcherby Community Centre and it will be considered by members of Carlisle City Council’s development control committee.

A report by Barbara Percival, one of the council’s planning officers, said the single storey extension would be at the back of the centre and only be visible from Victoria Road.

Her report says: “The proposed extension would wrap-around the existing centre resulting in only part of the building being visible."

The plan has attracted 31 letters of objection together with a petition signed by four residents.

Objections included:

  • increased parking problems
  • increased congestion
  • concerns that vulnerable people could not park near to their properties
  • concerns over the consultation process – all residents in Victoria Road were not consulted
  • speeding cars in Victoria Road.”

The application has been recommended for approval subject to a number of conditions.
