Work is underway to fix problems caused by heavy rain and this should take another three weeks to finish, say councillors.

Downpours on June 28 led to flooding and caused damage to a string of roads in the rural east of the county.

Culverts that allow water to flow under roads were damaged in a number of places and repairs have been carried out. A clean-up operation was also launched at Renwick, near Penrith, after mud and silt were washed into the village.

Cumbria County Council says highways teams have been working hard to fix the damage.

They have faced problems including surges of mud and the added complication of operating in flowing becks and working around wildlife such as crayfish.

Tony Markley, the Cumbria County councillor responsible for highways, said: “All in all the intense rainfall from late June has caused damage which will take around another three weeks to get on top of and will cost about £50,000.

“I’d like to extend my thanks to highways staff who have worked round-the-clock to attend to these repairs as quickly as possible.”

Repairs have been needed or are continuing at places including Glassonby, Gamblesby, Little Salkeld and near Kirkoswald.
