Work is still due to be carried out on a Northside riverbank in Workington which has eroded by 30ft since the 2009 floods.

The damage to the north bank of the Derwent is dragging trees into the water near Navvies Bridge.

Cumbria County Council said it was waiting for the go-ahead from the Environment Agency and Marine Management Organisation before it can start repair work.

The council has also requested ecological assessments to determine whether more environmental assessment works might be needed.

The council and Connect Roads – the council’s managing agent for the A596 – want to stabilise the river bank by placing large stone blocks against it. As part of the work they would have to relocate the gravel from the south side of the river to the north side.

Allerdale council, which owns the land, has erected a temporary fence.

A county spokeswoman said: “Until the requirements of any further environmental assessment work is known, it isn’t yet possible to be clear about when consents may be provided and the timescale for when engineering works could commence.”

• The new Northside bridge is due to open next week, with Princess Anne as guest of honour at the opening ceremony for the River Derwent crossing on October 22.

Work began in August last year on the new bridge, which was funded by the Department for Transport.
