Recycling bins to be withdrawn from car park

Recycling bins are to be removed from a Wigton car park.
Allerdale council has decided to scrap the facility on the Water Street car park from February 14.
This follows the extension of the purple bag recycling scheme to more areas of Wigton over the past year giving most homes their own doorstep recycling service.
Michael Heaslip, executive member with responsibility for recycling, said: “Recent monitoring of the recycling bins in Water Street Car Park has revealed that use of the can bank is now limited, with the bank only needing to be emptied on average every six weeks.
“The bottle banks are also under-utilised and alternative bottle banks are available in the nearby Co-op car park. There will still be 24-hour community facilities available at the nearby Syke Road household waste recycling centre.”
The removal of the bins, which was discussed by Wigton Town Council at its meeting of January 9, will enable the Friday market, which starts up again on February 15 after its winter break, to move into the space.
