Huge queues of passengers were left stranded at Carlisle Railway Station as travellers were hit by another day of delays.

A fault on an overhead power line came a day after landslides and flooding caused chaos on the West Coast Mainline.

Frustrated passengers yesterday lined the length of the platform waiting for trains to take them north to Glasgow and Edinburgh.

Problems were caused by a fault with overhead lines at Lockerbie and caused delays of more than two hours.

Those waiting to travel were told that replacement bus services were on their way.

Helen Hayden, 23, of Port Carlisle, was planning on travelling to Leicester via Birmingham New Street to see friends from university.

She got to the station to find that her train had been cancelled and she wasn’t able to travel.

She said: “I heard a member of staff say they were putting on 10 buses but there are hundreds of passengers on the platform.

“I even took an hour off work – it was bedlam.”

Passengers were told that they could wait for buses or go to the nearby taxi rank to get to their eventual destinations.

Many elected to wait outside rather than queue inside the station.

Following problems on Thursday, commuters criticised Virgin rail bosses following delays at Carlisle.

Cancelled trains saw scenes of chaos as rail bosses attempted to transport thousands of people between Carlisle and Preston stations.

Three landslips on the West Coast Mainline service left two trains stranded for up to three hours, and cancelled all services between Preston and Carlisle on Thursday afternoon and evening.
