The route between Carlisle and Newcastle is affected until 11.40am on Sunday as is the Settle-Carlisle line.

Replacement buses are running between Haltwhistle and Carlisle until the work is finished.

On the line to Leeds, buses are replacing trains between Carlisle and Appleby/Kirkby Stephen, according to information issued by Northern Rail.

Meanwhile there will be no trains running between Whitehaven and Carlisle throughout day. Replacement buses have been arranged for passengers.
