Visit: Princess Anne

The Princess Royal will visit on October 22 at the invitation of Cumbria County Council.

The £11.2m bridge is a replacement for the structure that was swept away by floods in November 2009, killing PC Bill Barker who was directing drivers away when it collapsed under him.

The fire HQ at Kemplay Bank, Penrith, replaces the HQ in Cockermouth.

It incorporates a new fire station for the town.

Councillor Tony Markley, the cabinet member for economic development, announced details of the royal visit when the council met yesterday.

He said: “We said it would take three years to fully recover from the floods of 2009. After nearly three years we have a date for the opening of Northside Bridge. We anticipate a royal opening because the Princess Royal has agreed to open the bridge and the new fire HQ in Penrith later the same day.”
