Pregnant woman's unborn baby fine after road crash

A pregnant woman airlifted to hospital after a crash is being closely watched by doctors but has been told her unborn baby is fine.
She had to be cut free from her car and was flown to Carlisle’s Cumberland Infirmary, where she was being kept overnight as a precaution.
A family spokeswoman said that the woman, whose baby is due in June, had been checked by doctors and given the all-clear.
She added: “She’s black and blue and she has a chest injury. They have kept her in hospital just in case. We would like to thank the air ambulance and the fire crews.”
The two-vehicle collision near Abbeytown happened just after 8am yesterday.
She had been in a Ford Ka which collided with a Ford Ranger pick-up at a narrow bridge over the River Waver, on the road towards Wigton.
The driver of the Ford Ranger was understood not to be hurt.
Police, ambulance and the fire service were called to the smash along with the Pride of Cumbria helicopter, based at Langwathby, near Penrith, and operated by the Great North Air Ambulance (GNAA).
A GNAA spokesman said its paramedics assisted land ambulance staff to assess and treat the woman, believed to be in her twenties, for suspected chest and leg injuries before she was flown to hospital.
She was in a stable condition on arrival at the Cumberland Infirmary. Her injuries were said to be minor but police said she may be kept in for further tests.
A fire service spokesman said: “Firefighters from Silloth and Wigton were called to a road traffic collision involving two vehicles, with one person trapped. Crews used cutting gear to free the casualty.”
The road was closed for several hours while the scene was cleared and an investigation launched.
The Highways Agency was brought in to deal with the aftermath of the collision.
Police have appealed for anyone with information about what happened to call officers on 101.
