Police swoop on Wigton bank in hunt for Euros fraudster
Last updated at 12:50, Tuesday, 23 June 2009
Police swooped on a Wigton bank yesterday after staff thought they had spotted a fraudster responsible for stealing thousands of euros.
Staff identified a man in his 50s who they believed matched a police description of a conman posing as the manager of a local travel agency to steal 6,000 euros from a mail sorting office.
Police raced to the bank at about 11am but have confirmed that the man identified was not connected to the crime last Thursday morning in which a smartly-dressed man in a pinstriped suit with a briefcase intercepted the money at Wigton’s Royal Mail sorting office.
He had ordered the cash from the travel agency the day before but then called the sorting office, pretending to be the agency manager, and picked up the cash after signing for it using fictitious identification in the name of Mark Wright.
