Police seal off part of Cumbrian town

Armed officers were called to an incident that forced part of a Cumbrian town to be sealed off this morning.

People were urged to avoid the Meadow View area of Whitehaven after police received reports of "a man acting in a threatening way" towards workmen near his house.

Initial unconfirmed reports said the man may have had a gun.

As a precautionary measure, officers cordoned off the area around Meadow View, including the Kells Road area.

A 52-year-old man was arrested and later released on bail until October 25. A firearm - an air rifle - was recovered.

Officers, who were called at 7.45am, thanked residents for their co-operation.
