Allan Atkinson, 60, of Etterby, was last seen in the Cumwhinton Road area of the city at 1pm on Tuesday.

He has not been heard of or seen since and police this morning urged Mr Atkinson to contact them.

He is described as 5ft 10in tall, with short, light brown hair. He is of medium build with a ruddy complexion.

When he was last seen he was wearing blue jeans and a grey jacket with a hood.

Inspector Richard Quinn said: “We are continuing our enquiries to find Mr Atkinson. If Mr Atkinson hears this appeal I would urge him to get in contact with the police to let us know he is safe and well.

“If anyone has seen Mr Atkinson, or has any ideas of where he may be, please get in touch as soon as possible as you may have information important to our search.”

It is thought he may be staying in hotels in the Carlisle or Keswick areas.

Anyone who can help should call police on 101.

Will changes to the stop and search code increase your trust in the police?

I already trust our police to act in the best interests of the law-abiding

Don't care. I doubt stop and search is used much in Cumbria anyway

No. Who's to say the new code will be followed faithfully?
