Police are hunting a masked raider who tried to rob a west Cumbrian shop armed with a metal bar.
The would-be robber terrified staff at the Co-op on Harrington Road, Workington, when he banged the iron bar on the counter and threatened them just after 9pm yesterday.
Staff and customers challenged the man and he made off through a back alley across Peter Street car park.
Nothing was taken during the foiled raid but a police spokesman said that staff were left shaken.
The spokesman said: “The man had his head covered. He banged the bar on the counter and threatened staff. Nobody was assaulted but the staff were shaken up. The man ran off when challenged and no property or money was taken.”
A worker at the shop this morning declined to comment.
The man is described as in his 30s, around 5ft 9in, of scruffy appearance with a bald head. He had his face covered during the incident.
Police are appealing for witnesses to get in touch on phone number 101.
- A man, aged 19, from Workington, was today (Weds) arrested on suspicion of attempted robbery and is helping police with their inquiries.
