Speeding drivers are being targeted in west Cumbria – and one motorist has allegedly been clocked at 114mph.

Copeland police and members of the Western Roads Policing Unit staged a crackdown yesterday morning on the Distington bypass.

The operation was in response to a recent rise in crashes in the area.

Four drivers were caught at speeds ranging from 85mph to 114mph, says the force.

One motorist was offered speed awareness training and two were issued with £60 fixed penalty tickets and had three points added to their licences.

The 23-year-old driver allegedly travelling at 114mph has been reported for summons. He will appear at court at a later date.

Sergeant Darren Bawden, from the roads unit, said: “It is our priority to reduce the number of road traffic collisions on our county’s roads.

"The Distington bypass is a dual carriageway which can see people driving at excess speed and we are working to tackle this.

"Speeding not only puts your life at risk but also the lives of other drivers. We will continue to run operations in the future to tackle speeding in the area.”
