Police called to Carlisle firearms incident

A street was sealed off after police were called to a firearms alert.

A man, 28, was arrested on suspicion of what police called firearms offences after officers were dispatched to Carlisle city centre yesterday afternoon.

A bag of firearms ammunition had been found at the railway station where a man was said to have been acting in an “agitated” manner. The man left the bag at the station and made off towards Botchergate.

Tait Street, off Botchergate, was cordoned off and residents were told to stay in their homes while police searched for a man.

A force spokesman said: “We were looking for a man in the area. We had reports of a firearms-related incident.

“A man was arrested on suspicion of firearms offences. No one was injured and there are no weapons outstanding. The cordon was quickly lifted.”
