Police have renewed their appeal for information about a horrifying car crash which has left an 11-year-old boy critically ill in hospital.

The crash happened on the A69 between Greenhead and Haltwhistle on Wednesday afternoon. Police say they still do not know why the Range Rover being driven by the boy’s mother left the road and went down an embankment, where it came to rest partially on the railway line.

The car was then clipped by a passing freight train which had earlier left Carlisle.

Also in the Range Rover was the injured boy’s 15-year-old brother.

The younger boy was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle, where he remains in a critical condition with potentially life threatening injuries.

The mother and 15-year-old boy were treated for minor injuries, say police.

A spokesman for Northumbria Police said the inquiry was ongoing, and so far nothing was being ruled out.

Police want anyone who was on the A69 in the area around the time of the crash, at 4.25pm, or anyone who saw what happened to contact them on 101 ext 69191.

Chief Inspector Peter Reeve said: “Inquiries into the collision are ongoing and we are keen to speak to anyone who saw the incident to contact us with any information.

“We are not ruling out any lines of inquiry as to the cause of the crash at this stage – including the weather, ice on the roads or other road users.

“We really need to hear from anyone who was on the A69 in the area around the time of the crash as they could have information that could really help us with the investigation.”
