Plans to convert a former Maryport cinema into seven apartments have been approved by Allerdale Council.

Steve Wood wants to turn the first and second floors of the prominent building in Senhouse Street into three two-bedroom and four one-bedroom flats.

Mr Wood bought the Carlton Cinema four years ago as a base for a pottery business and cafe.

Dry rot was then found on the ground floor.

He was forced to close the cafe immediately, eventually having to liquidate that part of the business.

Mr Wood said recently that he wanted to use the ground floor of the Carlton as an indoor market and hopes to open it next month.

He planned to offer reasonable rents and three-monthly renewable leases.
