Plans submitted for £1.5m filling station, coffee shop and store

Plans have been lodged to knock down a Cockermouth filling station and build a new £1.5 million replacement.
The new service station, complete with a Starbucks drive through coffee shop and convenience store with Subway, plus three car washes, could create up to 60 jobs.
Euro Garages Ltd pulled its original plan to revamp the Oakhurst filling station, off the A66 roundabout, last year after complaints from residents.
A spokesman for the Blackburn firm said they had since been in talks with Allerdale Council and were “committed” to redeveloping the site. “We hope development could start later this year,” he added. The company bought 40 Esso garages, including the Cockermouth site, last year and the new plans were lodged with the council this week.
"They will now go to consultation with neighbours and officials until April 11."
The original plan caused an outcry among some town traders and residents, with residents and businesses fearing it would stop people going into the town.
Jonty Chippendale, chairman of the town’s Chamber of Trade, said he believed the convenience store could be “detrimental to the town centre”.
“The existing shop on the Oakhurst site is more than adequate,” he said.
“A development like that out of the town centre is contrary to the local plan.”
Graham Cockbain, on behalf of Euro Garages Ltd, said that the service station would provide for the needs of workers on the neighbouring business park, as well as for passing motorists.

As said before it's up to the local traders to adapt, let's face it it's already a run down backwater.
