Plan to convert Cumbrian brewery into flats

Beer lovers could soon own their dream home – in a Cockermouth brewery.
Plans for 16 apartments in a redundant part of Castle Brewery, part of Jennings brewery, have been recommended for the go-ahead by planners.
The flats will be on the first, second, third and fourth floors of the building due to the brewery being in a flood risk area.
The ground floor will be used as storage.
Council planners heard that objections had been raised by people worried about enough car parking, flooding, and concern about noise and traffic associated with Jennings brewery.
Marston’s, which owns Jennings, applied to Allerdale Council to convert the Grade II listed Maltings building on Brewery Lane.
It was formerly used for brewery production, storage and offices but has stood empty since before the 2009 floods.
The company said that it has to be used for something before it deteriorated.
They applied for permission to create 10 two-bedroom apartments and six three-bedroom apartments.
A building next to the Maltings, once used as a bottling plant, will be demolished to create 22 parking spaces, surrounded by a wall being built as part of the town’s flood defences.
The news comes after a £1.7m housing development opened at St Leonard’s Close, in Cockermouth, last month – with 270 people applying to live in the 21 homes.
Social landlord Home Group built 21 family homes which should be complete this month.
About 270 people applied to rent the homes and tenants are lined up to move into the six two-bedroom and 15 three-bedroom homes, which are part of a wider scheme by Home Group.
The housing association opened its £3mn development of Bridge End Court, formerly Manor Court, in April 2012 which provided 38 apartments for the over-55s.

Flats seem to be the only way to go for any redundant buildings at the moment, but they need to sort some parking out for people who already live on castlegate especially since theyv yellow lined isle road!
