A pensioner is in hospital with serious injuries after being hit by a car yesterday afternoon.

The 66-year-old male pedestrian, from Workington, was hit by a Subaru Impreza in John Street, Maryport, at 4pm.

Paramedics rushed him to the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven, with fractures to his body.

Police said he remained in a stable condition in hospital this morning.

The 25-year-old driver of the Subaru Impreza from Dearham was uninjured.

John Street was closed for three hours while the vehicle was recovered and police officers conducted an examination of the scene.

Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward, particularly a driver of a blue-coloured delivery-type van or vehicle that was parked at the junction of John Street and Crosby Street at the time of the collision.
