Objections mount against 50-home scheme for west Cumbria

Residents claim a proposed 50-home estate in Harrington will clog up roads, insisting the village has reached saturation point.

Persimmon Homes has lodged plans for 53 new homes off Bellaport Gardens, in Harrington. They are due to be debated by Allerdale council after being called in by Hilary Harrington over concerns about the size of the development.

More objections to the scheme were lodged by residents in the past few weeks, with all of them citing concerns about an already congested Church Road’s ability to cope with at least 53 more cars.

The county and town councils have both objected to the development, which would see 33 three-bedroom, 10 two-bedroom and 10 four-bedroom homes built on the five-acre former sand quarry site.

Chris Bagshaw, Workington town council clerk, said the cumulative impact of the development – and another in High Harrington – would “overwhelm” the small community and put added pressure on schools and GPs.

“The site has only one access road through the centre of the village and councillors do not believe the traffic forecast,” he said.

He said councillors were opposed to the scheme and did not believe the brownfield site was suitable for a housing development.

Beckstone Primary teacher Lynda Strong spoke of her “very strong opposition” to the plans.

“It is ridiculous that the council should even consider this,” she said. “The traffic and congestion on Church Road would become a total and utter nightmare at the junction at Beckstone Bridge.

“Harrington does not need another housing estate. Two large ones have been granted at High Harrington and the village has swollen enough.”

She said the thought of 60-plus extra cars a day using the road as access to Beckstone Primary “beggared belief”.

“It would be a horrendous situation made a thousand times worse,” she said.

Glennys Wiggin, of Church Road, said the 200-house development at High Harrington, together with the proposed one at Bellaport, would “seriously add to the traffic congestion already experienced”.

“[Given] a bus service that stops at 6pm and a train service that is not frequent, I predict the use of cars will be the mode of transport preferred,” she said. “This development is flawed and of no benefit to the village or local inhabitants.”

Another resident said she wanted to see the council “come up with answers to the traffic problem”.

The plans are due to be debated by Allerdale in the next few weeks.
