North Cumbrian villagers’ fears after serious road crashes

Village residents on one of Cumbria’s busiest roads have called for drivers to slow down after two serious accidents in a few weeks.

The A596 was closed at Waverton, near Wigton for several hours yesterday after a van, a car and an agricultural vehicle were involved in an accident.
Just over a fortnight ago, a JCB digger and a 4x4 were involved in another crash on the same stretch of road. It left the 39-year-old driver of the car with two broken bones in his leg.
Venetia Faunch lives just off the road and says she’s had many near-misses because drivers don’t slow down through the village.
She said: “I think people don’t notice that the speed limit drops from 60 miles per hour to 40.
“I think the limit should be dropped to 20mph but even that might not make a difference.
“Bollards were put in to stop people overtaking but people just go around them on the wrong side. My husband saw the accident a few weeks ago and it was horrendous.”
She won’t let her 11-year-old daughter walk through the village to catch the school bus when she starts in September because she doesn’t believe the pavements are safe.
“It’s not just cars that go too fast, it’s wagons too,” she added.
A 23-year-old man from Carlisle was taken to the Cumberland Infirmary with non life-threatening injuries after yesterday morning’s accident. It involved a System Group van, a Seat driven by a 44-year-old woman from Carlisle and a green Merlo dumper driven by a 58-year-old Aspatria man.
Cyclists Ian and Heather Thwaite from Wigton came upon the accident on their tandem. Mr Thwaite said: “It’s a dangerous road. We cycle on the footpath but don’t really feel safe.
“Wagons go past so close, they nearly touch us. The speed limit needs to be reduced and the police need to enforce it.
“Part of the wreckage from the crash ended up on the path. Someone could have been killed.”
