A 62-year-old man has appeared in court accused of assaulting a linesman at a rugby match.
Thomas Kirk Hughes was charged after an alleged incident in the match between Carlisle RFC and Aspatria RUFC at the city’s rugby club ground on Warwick Road on March 31.
Hughes, whose son was playing for Carlisle, was alleged to have climbed over the barrier and hit linesman Michael Irving Ray.
Mr Ray, the official touch judge for Aspatria RUFC, was left with a broken nose.
At the city’s Crown Court, Hughes, who lives in Kirklinton, north of Carlisle, pleaded not guilty to causing Mr Ray actual bodily harm.
He was remanded on unconditional bail to await his trial, which will be held in the week of March 11.
