Nightclub stairs fall man fined by Carlisle court

A man has been left with a £1,450 court bill for accidentally injuring another man by tumbling downstairs in a nightclub and hitting him with the pint glass he was holding.

Ben Ginesi, 26, had been struggling with Lee Cowperthwaite at the top of the stairs in O’Neil’s bar in Penrith, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Doormen were in the process of throwing him out when he fell down the stairs, accidentally hitting Mr Cowperthwaite, who by then was at the bottom.

Mr Cowperthwaite suffered a superficial cut to his cheek but was not badly injured.

Ginesi, of Alexandra Road, Penrith, pleaded guilty to causing him actual bodily on the basis he had been reckless in not putting the glass down when he was told to do so at the top of the stairs.

He was fined £500 and ordered to pay £400 compensation to Mr Cowperthwaite, with £550 in costs and statutory surcharge.
