New hotel planned for Cumbrian town

A new hotel and petrol station could be built in Penrith as part of phase two of the New Squares development.

Eden councillors will meet on Thursday to discuss the plans by Sainsbury’s for land around Common Garden Square.

A report by the council’s director of legal services, Paul Foote, says the proposed tenant would be Premier Inn, which would be granted a long lease.

During Thursday’s meeting councillors will be asked to give their approval in principle to the plans, with formal permission sought at a later date.
