New 30mph zones to make Eden villages safer

Speed limits have been extended around seven Eden villages in a move to boost safety.
Cumbria county council’s local committee for Eden agreed to introduce new 30mph zones and extend some existing ones at a meeting during the week.
They apply to Eamont Bridge, Brougham, Armathwaite, Berrier, Glassonby, Hilton and Murton.
The move is part of an annual review of current village speed limits conducted by the county council and comes after requests from councillors, police and parish councils.
Martin Stephenson, chairman of the Eden Local Committee, said the local communities were very much in favour of the new limits.
“They will benefit motorists, cyclists and pedestrians,” he added.
The new routes include extending the existing 30mph on the A6 at Eamont Bridge, extending the 30mph zone on the B262 at Brougham Hall out to the A6 and extending the 30mph in Armathwaite past the Fox and Pheasant pub.
New 30mph zones will be introduced in Berrier, Glassonby, Hilton and Murton with Hilton and Murton being covered by one limit.
Speeding has been flagged up as a problem in the Penrith area in the past, with extra patrols sent out in the town and around surrounding villages and countryside to catch those breaking the law.
The issue was flagged up residents who said the A686, stretching from Penrith to Langwathby, Melmerby and on to Alston, was one of the main routes where there were problems.
A council spokesman said they began consultation on the new limits last September and advertised them during November and early December. No objections were received.
