Mum and daughter plan to turn Carlisle cafe into live music venue

They have already brought original live music – and lots of it – to the market town of Brampton at their successful Off the Wall cafe.
And now Barbara Goodman and her daughter Emma are planning to do the same thing at the cafe they run in Cecil Street, Carlisle.
The mother and daughter team say they have had a fantastic time making a success of their Brampton venture, which has been a big hit with live music lovers.
They have now applied for a premises licence which will, if approved by the city council’s licensing committee, allow them to sell alcohol and have live entertainment at their cafe in the city, which has gone under the name The Cellar.
Emma, a graduate in multimedia and digital animation, said: “We’ve had an amazing time setting up the cafe in Brampton, and we’ve made so many friends. For us, it’s not really about business.
“It’s more of a lifestyle choice. Now, we want to do what we’ve done in Brampton here in Carlisle.”
The philosophy adopted by Emma and her mother, who has a background in catering, is to keep an open mind as far as the music is concerned.
All manner of performers have played at their Front Street cafe, including the duo Jinsky, Ash Mandrake, and The Rank Banjins. “It’s a real mix of music and styles,” said Emma.
As has happened in Brampton, they plan to have an open mic night at their Carlisle Off The Wall cafe, which could be mostly acoustic performers, and starting within the next couple of months.
She added: “We’re currently running it as just a cafe in Carlisle but as soon as we can get a licence we will serve alcohol and get live music.”
