Motorist did 72mph in 30mph city zone

A DRIVER who reached 72mph in a 30mph zone has been banned from the roads for 60 days.

Twenty-eight-year-old Jonathan Edgar was clocked by a police officer doing 72mph as he headed home up Stanwix Bank, Carlisle, after an evening at the cinema.

Carlisle Magistrates’ Court heard how it was shortly before 1am on January 8 when the policeman spotted the Range Rover and thought it was speeding.

Geoff Clapp, defending Edgar, said he had not been drinking and was heading home after an evening at the cinema.

“He was in a new vehicle which he was unfamiliar with,” he said. “He is trying to build his business up,” he said.

Mr Clapp said Edgar, of Whitlow Cottage, Alston, worked as a joiner on projects across Cumbria and Northumbria and was reliant on his van to fulfil work commitments.

Magistrates banned him for driving for 60 days and fined him £405 for speeding.

He was also ordered to pay £150 court costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
