Motorcyclist had to leap wall to avoid furious Cumbrian car driver

A motorcyclist had to leap over a wall when a driver deliberately drove his car at him after a road rage incident on one of Carlisle’s busiest roads.
Terence Chandler was riding his £6,000 bike in Victoria Road when he was involved in a minor collision with a Ford Mondeo driven by Penrith man Ian Bretherton, the city’s crown court heard.
He remonstrated with Bretherton – swearing at him and banging on the car window – before walking away.
But then Bretherton revved his engine and drove his car at him twice.
Mr Chandler hurled himself over the wall of the garden of the nearby Botcherby Community Centre so Bretherton drove forward again, this time over his motorbike.
Mr Chandler suffered “no great injury” but Mr Chandler’s motorbike and a waste bin were both damaged.
Bretherton, 44, of Abbotsford House, Wordsworth Street, Penrith, pleaded guilty to attempting to cause Mr Chandler grievous bodily harm.
He was granted bail to be sentenced on December 13.
