The 19-year-old has signed up to do the Race for Life in Carlisle on July 13 and hopes it will stand her in good stead for the Great North Run half-marathon in Newcastle later this year.

The student, who lives with her family at Fenton near Brampton, said: “Part of being Miss Cumbria is doing what you can to raise funds for good causes and to raise awareness about such things.

“I’ve signed up to do the Race for Life with my mum Deborah. A friend of mine has done it and told me what a great event it is.

“That is to raise funds for Cancer Research UK.”

Charlotte, who is currently on a public services course at Newton Rigg College near Penrith, hopes completing the event in Bitts Park in July will help as she trains for the Great North Run, which takes place on September 7.

She said: “I’m not a complete novice. I can do about seven or eight miles but I’ve never done a half marathon before. It’s going to be a challenge, that’s why you sign up.

“I’m doing it for the Eden Valley Hospice in Carlisle. I joined as a volunteer there earlier in the year and am part of the events team. I’ve not done a lot with them yet but this will go some way to support them too.

“I knew someone who recently went in and people do not realise the work of the hospice until they get into a situation where a loved one goes in. It is a different kind of care they give.”

Some of Charlotte’s fundraising for the Great North Run will go towards Beauty with a Purpose, the charity movement associated with the annual Miss England beauty pageant competition.

Charlotte, who has secured a place at an acting school in London starting later this year, won the Miss Cumbria title in November.

She is due to compete in the Miss England finals taking place next month.

Yes - the enterprise zone jobs and airport flights are a fantastic boost

It's more positive than expected but could have been better
