Takeaway plan for former Cumbrian Jobcentre

Plans to open a takeaway at the former Maryport Jobcentre have been revealed.

Permission to convert the building, in Mealpot Road, into a printers was sought back in April.

Now further plans have emerged to convert one of the remaining units at the property into a fast food outlet.

Owner Mike Taylor, of Cherry Tree Drive, runs Mike Taylor Printing Services.

He stressed that the new proposal would be in addition to his printing business.

Mr Taylor added that the plan was always to rent out the remaining space in the premises to other businesses.

However he would not say at this stage what kind of takeaway was planned or who would be running it.

The application, recently received by Allerdale council, is to change the use of part of the former Jobcentre so it can become a fast food outlet.

Councillor Angela Kendall, who represents the Netherhall ward, said she was pleased to hear it was going to be used for something.

“I’ll be going into the office this week to have a look at the plans,” she said.

Janice Wood, an Allerdale councillor for Maryport, said she would be in favour.

“Personally I can’t see anything wrong with it. It’s jobs and it’s business,” she said. “Any new business is welcomed in Maryport as far as I’m concerned.”

Mr Taylor decided to move his printing firm from the Solway Industrial Estate to the former Jobcentre as there is more space to grow.
