Man seriously hurt on A6 near Carlisle

A man was airlifted to hospital in Newcastle with multiple injuries following an accident on the A6 near Carlisle today.

It happened around 3pm just north of the Golden Fleece Roundabout at M6 junction 42.

One man was said to be "seriously injured" and, after treatment at the scene, was flown to the Royal Victoria Infirmary by the Teesside-based Great North Air Ambulance 'Guardian of the North'.

The northbound carriageway was closed for nearly three hours while emergency services dealt with the incident.
