A major road has reopened following a crash which left a man seriously injured.
Traffic diversions were put in place after the collision on the A66 at Bridgefoot, near Workington, at 8.12 am today. The road reopened at about 1pm.
The smash involved a Peugeot 207 car, being driven by a 48-year-old man from Workington and a Renault Clio car being driven by a 21-year-old Carlisle woman.
The male driver suffered pelvic and abdominal injuries and was initially given emergency medical treatment at the scene.
He was subsequently taken to the West Cumberland Hospital in Whitehaven by ambulance, where his condition was said to be “serious”.
The Clio driver was said to have less serious injuries and was described as “walking wounded”. She was also taken by ambulance to the West Cumberland.
The road was closed in both directions, leaving traffic queued in both directions between the Chapel Brow roundabout and the Brigham crossroads junction.
Westbound vehicles were diverted via Brigham, while eastbound traffic was sent via Bridgefoot.
One fire engine from Workington was sent to the scene but a spokesman for Cumbria County Fire and Rescue Service said no one was trapped.
Firefighters instead worked on making the area safe.
