Bad feeling between two young men erupted into violence when one of them attacked the other during a night out, breaking his jaw.

Victim Richard Hurst was so badly injured that surgeons had to operate, using pins and metal plates to rebuild his shattered jaw, Carlisle Crown Court heard.

Lewis Jenkinson, 22, of Fern Way, Whitehaven, admitted inflicting grievous bodily harm on his victim in the attack at Captain Senny’s pub in Whitehaven on July 6.

Gerard Rogerson, prosecuting, said the two men who had previously associated with each other had decided to go their separate ways following arguments over a girlfriend.

There had been a suggestion that Jenkinson was responsible for damage to the other man’s car.

The subject was raised when the two men encountered each other at the Senhouse Street pub, said Mr Rogerson.

At one point, Jenkinson was being held back by two of his friends but he then broke free and began punching Mr Hurst, said Mr Rogerson.

“He was taken to The Cumberland Infirmary and told that his jaw had been broken and would require surgery,” said the prosecutor.

Doctors also had to remove a lower wisdom tooth.

When interviewed by police, Jenkinson admitted punching the other man three times.

The judge imposed a 12 months jail term but suspended it for two years and told Jenkinson he must do 80 hours of unpaid work in the community. He must also pay his victim compensation of £5,000 and pay £340 court costs.
