Man killed in north Cumbria road crash named

A man killed in a crash on a main road near Carlisle has been identified by police.

He was Daniel Ian Staples, 28, of Peel Street, Carlisle.

His parents Tony and Kath today described their son, known as Podge, as outgoing, always full of fun and loving and caring towards his family and friends.

"He had just started his career after working so hard to get qualified and was looking forward to being best man at his friend’s wedding this year and was planning the stag do.

“We all miss him so much and are still coming to terms that he has gone. His passing has left a void in our lives that he, with his presence and vitality, filled. There was never a dull moment with him around," they said.

Mr Staples was driving a Vauxhall Vectra car which was in collision with a milk tanker between Cardewlees and the Nealhouse junction shortly before 8am yesterday.

The 64-year-old tanker driver, from Fletchertown, was unhurt.

The busy road was shut between the Peter Lane and Thursby roundabouts until about 12noon while the vehicles were recovered and collision investigators examined the scene.

The crash caused lengthy tailbacks and motoirists were later advised to avoid the area. Diversions were put in place.

Any witnesses to the crash are asked to call police on 101.
