Man killed in Cumbrian house fire named

A man who died in a house fire on New Year's Eve has been identified by police.

Richard Durkin, 58, of Bridge Street, Ambleside, died at the scene of the fire which broke out at around 7.30am today.

Despite efforts by paramedics, Mr Durkin died at the scene. His partner, aged 53, who was in the house at the time,  was not injured.  His family has been informed.

Police are working with Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service to establish the cause of the fire, which as this time is not being treated as suspicious.

The fire started in the kitchen of the house and was "well developed" before emergency services arrived.

Bridge Street has now reopened after being closed for several hours. Diversions had been put in place.
