Man illegally worked as dentist in Carlisle

A man has been fined for unlawfully practising dentistry in Carlisle.

Derek Stokoe also unlawfully used the protected title dental technician, heard Westminster Magistrates' Court today.

The offences took place at D & DA Stokoe, Dental Laboratory, on Crosby Street, on May 2. Stokoe admitted, by post, both charges.

By law, all dentists, dental nurses, dental technicians, clinical dental technicians, dental hygienists, dental therapists and orthodontic therapists must be registered with regulator the General Dental Council to work in the UK. This is to ensure only appropriately qualified and skilled dental professionals are part of the dental team looking after patients.

Stokoe was removed from the council's register on August 3, 2011 for failing to pay his annual retention fee.

He was today fined £500, ordered to pay a £25 victim surcharge and £500 costs.
